I can’t stop watching. The Prix de Lausanne, one of the ballet world’s most prestigious competitions for dancers aged 15 to 18, is in progress now and we can view it on YouTube.
Unlike most competitions, where dancers advance through multiple elimination rounds, the Prix de Lausanne takes a unique approach. Over the course of a week, participants are evaluated not only on their stage performances but also in dance classes, allowing judges to assess their technique, artistry, and adaptability in a professional training environment. This holistic evaluation ensures that dancers are recognized for their full potential—not just their final performance.
In addition to the competition, scholarships are also distributed. They include one year of free tuition at partner schools and a stipend of 20,000 Swiss francs to assist with living expenses. Partner institutions include the Royal Ballet School in London, the Paris Opera Ballet School, and the American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School.
I couldn’t take my eyes off of Chloe Helimets (#101), a 15-year-old dancer from California. She possesses something you can’t teach, a trait every great artist has, fair or not. Beyond her beautiful carriage, she possesses an innate musicality and a clear vision for her roles. You can click here to view her run-through today of You Turn Me On, I’m a Radio by Joni Mitchell, choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon.
The finals are this Saturday. You can view the competition in progress this week through their YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/PrixdeLausanne.
Let’s see how the rest of the week unfolds.
